What’s Coming Up – Week of February 11-15, 2019

 

 

Miscellaneous:

Camp News:

  • Information regarding opportunities for parents to volunteer as camp chaperones were sent home on Wed. of this week. If you are interested please return the form to school by Feb. 19th.
  • Dates for camp this year are May 16-17.

Symphony Field Trip:

  • On February 19, fifth graders will have the opportunity to travel to Holland to see a special performance by the Grand Rapids Symphony. We will leave school around 10:15 and return around 1:00.
  • Valentine’s Day:
  • In fifth grade, we do not do parties for Valentine’s Day.
  • We will have an optional Valentine exchange. If your child chooses to participate, please have him or her bring a Valentine for each student in the class .
  • We will decorate bags to use to gather our Valentines, so there is no need to create a box or container to send in.

Math:

We are launching Unit 5 which will focus on division of whole numbers and decimals.  Once again, it is incredibly important that your child keeps practicing their math facts.  A high level of fact fluency is a great indicator for future math success!

ELA: Historical Fiction:

  • We are continuing to focus on becoming powerful readers of historical fiction texts.  Students are reading historical fiction novels in small groups as book clubs. To keep up with reading expectations, it is important for your child to honor their group’s reading plan.    
  • Reminder….The students are expected to read 100 minutes a week. As a parent please initial the log when they read at home, showing you confirm your child has read for the minutes recorded.

Social Studies:

We are exploring Life in Colonial America.

Science:  

We are continuing studying the unit, “Ch-ch-changes” on physical changes.

Early Release on February 1st!

Camp News:

  • Balance reminders for fifth grade activity fees were sent home last week. Remaining balances are due by February 1. Please make checks payable to Georgetown Elementary.
  • Information regarding opportunities for parents to volunteer as camp chaperones will be coming home after mid-winter break.
  • Dates for camp this year are May 16-17.

We are launching Unit 5 which will focus on division of whole numbers and decimals.  Once again, it is incredibly important that your child keeps practicing their math facts.  A high level of fact fluency is a great indicator for future math success!

  • Math: We are working on a unit that focuses on multi-digit multiplication of whole numbers and decimals.  Please continue to help your child with their multiplication math facts.

Holiday Music Program: Georgetown’s 3rd-5th grade holiday music program will be from 7:45 – 8:15 (Students report no earlier than 7:30) on Thursday, December 13th at Fair Haven Church.  Please click the link HERE to see more detailed program information from Mrs. Bretz.

Early Release: Friday, December 14th.

Holiday Class Party: Our classroom holiday party will be on Friday, Dec. 21. We will be having a breakfast.

Holiday Break: Our last day of school before holiday break will be Friday, December 21.  Have a safe and restful break. We’ll see you on January 7.

ELA: Non-Fiction Texts

  • We are focusing on becoming powerful readers of narrative and expository nonfiction texts, as well as constructing written responses that give evidence to support our thinking.
  • Reminder….The students are expected to read 100 minutes a week. As a parent please initial the log when they read at home, showing you confirm your child has read for the minutes recorded.

Science: We are wrapping up our science unit “Go with the Flow!”

Candy Cane Sale: The annual candy cane sale is coming! Our 5th grade classes will be selling candy canes to help raise money for their 5th grade activities. Penguin Patch Holiday ShopThe holiday shop will be available next week if the students wish to buy holiday presents for their loved ones. Our classroom’s shopping day will be Thursday, December 6th.

Holiday Music Program: Georgetown’s holiday music program will be in the evening on Thursday, December 13th at Fair Haven Church. Watch the blog for future updates.

Culver’s Night

On Monday, November 19 from 5:00 – 8:00 come join parents and staff to enjoy some yummy Culver’s! Bring your family by for dinner or get a concrete mixer and support your school! You can either come in and eat or go through the drive-thru! Culver’s restaurant is located at 7393 Cottonwood Dr, Jenison, MI 49428

Thanksgiving Break

We’ll be off beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 21 and return on Monday, Nov. 26. We hope you enjoy some relaxing time with family or friends.

PE Cares

Friday, November 16th is the last chance to donate items for our PE cares annual food drive.

  • Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on November 5th and November 7th. A conference time slip was sent home last week. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress.
  • The Scholastic Book Fair will be at Georgetown next week. Our class will preview on Tuesday and shop on Thursday.
  • Goodies Factory fundraiser items will be delivered on Tuesday, November 13. Please make arrangements to pick up your order at Georgetown elementary between 3:00 and 5:00 PM that day.

Miscellaneous:

 

  • Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on November 5th and November 7th. A conference time slip is being sent home today. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress. Please email your child’s teacher ASAP if your conference time needs to be rescheduled.

 

  • Goodies Factory fundraiser orders and payment due on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
    • Please turn in one check payable to Georgetown Elementary for the entire order.
    • The 5th grade activity fee of $100, minus any money earned by fundraising, is due on or before February 1, 2019. Once the fundraiser is complete, you will be informed of the remaining balance due.

 

  • Fall parties will be on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 2:15-3:15. Students are to bring their costume to school. Time will be given for the kids to change into them prior to the party.

 

  • Early release on Friday, November 2.
