  • Please remember to bring in flashlights to use for the Holiday Program.

Lastly, I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I hope that you have a chance to relax and enjoy your families. This Thanksgiving I am very thankful to have each of your children as part of my every day life! Each one of them truly has touched my heart. Have a great weekend!

Holiday Program

We will be holding our annual holiday music program on November 27 this year!   There will be two performances at Fair Haven Ministries located on the corner of Baldwin Ave. and 28th Ave. (Grads K-2 @ 6:30  and Grades 3-5 @ 7:45). Specific details about drop off times for each performance will arrive home following Thanksgiving Break.

Also, Mrs. Bretz would like the 5th grade students to bring in a normal size flashlight?  (Please not the tiny ones, these need to be the standard size – about 3″ diameter ones)  Students need to have their names on them and they will bring them home with them after the program.  We will be practicing with these in class so the sooner they can bring them in, the better.  Mrs. Bretz will have boxes to store them in the music room.

Lastly, Mrs. Bretz is asking all the fourth and fifth graders to bring in pictures celebrating the Holidays. She will not be able to include everyone’s pictures due to the length of the song, but it will be a surprise to see who’s pictures make it into the slideshow. These  pictures are needed as soon as possible in order to get them into a slideshow, so please start bringing in your pictures.   Here is Mrs. Bretz’s e-mail address if the parents want to e-mail her a digital version: abretz@hpseagles.net

What’s Coming Up-Week of November 12

Miscellaneous:
There are many miscellaneous items for the upcoming weeks.

  • The fundraiser will be delivered on Tuesday, November 13th. Thank you to those parents who have offered to come at 2:00 and help organize the items. Please remember to pick up the merchandise which you sold from 3:15-5:15.
  • We will be having extra music practices for our holiday program during the school day the next few weeks. The students are working hard preparing for the concert on November 27th! Mark this special evening on your calendars!
  • Keep sending in your $2.00 and can goods for the Mindful Acts of Kindness. The goal is for each class to raise enough money to buy a solar light for our global neighbors. Thank you!
  • We will be sending home a notice on Monday with your child containing important camp information. Keep an eye out for this mailing.
  • Just a reminder that Georgetown will not have school on Wed. November 21st-November 23rd due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Math: We will continue working on decimals for the next week and a half. Students will continue to compare and order decimals as well as add and subtract whole numbers and decimals. Students will likely have homework and/or a quiz over what they have been learning so make sure to check your child’s math teachers blog for any updates.

ELA: The next few weeks in ELA will be focused upon the students individually reading their book for book clubs and our study of literary essays.  Students will read and journal their thinking as they read. Then they will come together and discuss with their book club members the different character traits found within their literary texts.

Social Studies:  We will continue our study of the Native Americans.  We will continue to study about the locations and places of where they lived, what they ate, their culture and how they adapted and/or modified their environment after they migrated.  We are also reading picture books to the students to reinforce their learning about each Native American group.  We will likely have a quiz later next week so watch your Social Studies teacher’s blog for more information.

Science: We will continue our unit of Objects in the Sky in the coming weeks. We just finished our first vocabulary quiz and will have our second vocabulary quiz just before Thanksgiving. We will post the specific day on our blogs when we get closer. So far we have completed Seasons and The Solar System. The next 4 sections will be: The Moon, Constellations, Eclipses, and Tides. Be on the lookout for fun activities coming home that we do in class. We are also in the process of booking a trip to the Grand Rapids Planetarium in the near future, more details to come concerning that

Dear Parents,

It is getting close to that time when we get to deliver all of our goodies from our 5th grade camp fundraiser. However, before we can deliver it, we have to receive it from the Goodies Factory and give it to you.

Hopefully that is where your help and expertise will come into play.

As a 5th grade, we are looking for 2-3 helpers from each class to come in on Tuesday, November 13th from 2:00 to around 5:00 to help with getting the goodies separated and dispersed to the individual students and families. You can come and go as you like, you do not need to stay the entire time. The delivery needs to be separated, double checked, and put into groups for pick-up before 3:15.  Parental pick-up is 3:15-5:15.

If you would like to volunteer your time, please let your classroom teacher know and we will sign you up. Please let us know by this Sunday (Nov. 11) so we have an idea of how many volunteers we can expect.

Thanks for everything you’ve done this year.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact Mr. Bialochowski and he will help answer you inquiry.

What’s Happening the Week of November 5

We have numerous happenings beginning next week.

On Monday evening we will begin our Fall parent/teacher conferences.  Each year during conferences the Parents Club opens up the library and holds a Book Fair. It’s a great place to pick up a book to add to your child’s collection and/or give as a stocking stuffer!   Make sure you take a peek.  Each class has signed up for a time for their class to preview and then purchase books. Check with your child’s teacher’s blog for the date and time they are scheduled to go.

Another happening will be the kick-off to Mindful Giving.  Each class will be doing lessons about how we can be charitable both locally and globally.  Watch for details on your teacher’s blog about these two service projects Georgetown Elementary will be doing in November.

Please watch for a note that will be coming home asking for volunteers to help receive and distribute the Goodies Factory orders. Orders will be delivered on November 13th and ready for parent pick-up between 3:15-5:15.

Finally, we will be continuing with S.A.V.E. on Wednesday mornings.

Math:
We will continue working on decimals for the coming week. We will be adding and subtracting decimals and whole numbers. We will also continue to practice comparing two decimal numbers and putting them in order. During the early part of our week, we will have our first quiz of the unit. It will include writing a decimal number, comparing decimals, and adding/subtracting a pair of decimal numbers. Make sure to check your child’s math teachers blog for any updates.

ELA:
Our week in ELA will consist of primarily reading as we begin our book clubs and study of literary essays.  Students have selected a book to read and have been partnered with some other classmates.  They will be reading their book and then meet with their group to discuss what they have read.  They will take notes on their discussion which will mainly focus on the internal(implicit) and external(explicit) characteristics of the main character.

Social Studies:  We will continue our study of the Southwest and Pacific Northwest Native Americans.  We will be studying the location and place of where they lived, what they ate, their culture and how they adapted and/or modified their environment after they migrated down from Northern North America.

Science: This week in science we will continue to overview the foundation concepts about the seasons and the Solar System. We will do this by taking notes and having discussions from a keynote. We will be having a vocabulary quiz  on Wednesday. Please have the students visit our blogs to study and practice for this vocabulary quiz.

Halloween and G-mail News

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers that made our Halloween Party a huge success!  Everyone had a great time and I saw many great candid moments.  If you are willing to share your pictures with me because I for got my camera that would greatly be appreciated.   I will take the pictures whatever way you are willing to get them to me.  Thanks again to everyone that helped make today’s party great!

I also  wanted you to be aware that your son/daughter will be using their Hudsonville Gmail account at school.  This account should only be used for school work and must be used in an appropriate way.  I talked with students  about the rules and guidelines of this account.  They may occasionally have to use this Gmail account at home to work on a project so I am giving you the address so they are able to access their Gmail account from home.  The address is: http://mail.hpsstudents.net.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Thanks, and have a great night!
