What’s Coming Up- Week of February 18

Miscellaneous:

  • You should have received a camp balance form.  Camp fees are due February 28.  Please get those in so we can know exactly what we have to work with.  If you need a balance for your child contact your child’s teacher.

  • On Tuesday, February 19th the fifth grade will be going on a field trip to listen to the Grand Rapids Symphony.  We will be leaving about 10:15 and returning around 12:30.  Each class is allowed to bring 3 chaperones on this trip.  If you have an interest in chaperoning this trip contact your child’s teacher. Also, every student will need to have a sack lunch because we will not be back to the school in time for our normal lunch.

  • We are still taking volunteers for being a camp chaperone, if you are interested please give those forms to your child’s teacher.

  • Conferences are coming up on March 4, 5, 6. That is Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. If you remember in the fall, we didn’t have conferences on Tuesday because of the election.  Therefore, we have shifted the parents that had conferences on Wednesday to Tuesday and parents that had conferences on Thursday to Wednesday.  If this causes a problem with your schedule, please let the teacher know and they can make the necessary arrangements.  You will be getting a conference time and date form coming home on Monday to confirm when your conference is as of now. Thanks for being flexible in this change.

Math: We have started our unit on multiplying and dividing fractions.  By using comparison bars and number lines we have been able to solve multiplication problems involving fractions.  This unit also involves using area models to learn how to multiply and divide fractions.  Keep checking your child’s math teacher’s blog for homework assignments.

ELA:  We have moved into our study of historical fiction.  As we transition from one unit to the next we have been reading aloud from historical fiction novels, beginning book clubs reading historical fiction, and soon we will begin our writing of historical fiction.

Social Studies: The kids all had fun doing skits on the original 13 colonies.  The students became experts on the geographical features, location, and push and pull factors about early settlement and then created skits to share information with their classmates. So much fun!  Next week we will wrap up this unit by comparing colonial regions, and review for the upcoming unit test.  Watch our blogs for a test date.

Science: We have just finished our first three body systems and our pig dissection. It was a great learning experience for all of us. This week and next we will be getting into the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the excretory system. Be on the lookout for short quizzes coming after each unit.

Tidbits

  • Starting tomorrow the students may bring in their Valentine cards to exchange with classmates. We made envelopes in class today. Some of the children mentioned they want to bring a Valentine box they made last year. Please ask your child if that was their choice and make sure they bring the box to school tomorrow.
  • I had only 7 students hand in their reading logs from last week. The students may turn these in tomorrow to receive credit. Please reinforce with your child how important it is to READ daily at home. Thanks!

5th Grade Update

  • We will be going to Tarry Hall roller skating rink for our Valentine party on Feb. 14th.  If you haven’t sent in your child’s $4.00 to attend, please do soon as soon as possible. All parents are welcome to join us at the rink at 9:15.  If you wish to skate the fee will be $4.00 at the door, otherwise it is free to join the fun!
  • If your child wants to rent in-line skates instead of using roller skates that are included in the $4.00 fee, have them bring that money in on the day of the field trip and they can rent in-line skates at the window when they arrive.
  • You should have received a camp balance form.  Camp fees are due February 28.
  • Look for a camp chaperone volunteer note to come home on Tuesday.

What’s Coming Up- Week of February 4

Miscellaneous:

  • Be on the lookout for a note coming home with your money balance for 5th grade camp.
  • We will be going to Tarry Hall for roller skating on Feb. 14th. This will be in place of our Valentines party. We will leave school at 9:00 and return about 11:30. We will be collecting money for this which will be due by Feb. 7th.  A note will be coming home soon with the students with further information. Parents may meet us for no fee at the rink if they wish. However, if you wish to skate it will cost you $4.00 at the door. Let us know if you have any questions.

Math: We are finishing up or study of fractions which included comparing fractions, finding equivalent fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vise versa, and adding and subtracting fractions/mixed numbers. The next unit we will continue our study of fractions by learning how to multiply and divide them.

ELA:  Working our way through the writing process, we will continue writing our informational writing piece. The students have enjoyed studying and looking up research from non-fiction texts. We hope to be finishing our informational texts in the next few weeks. Our next ELA unit will be reading and writing using the historical fiction genre.

Social Studies: We will continue to learn about the original thirteen colonies.  Starting next week the students will be put into groups and will be asked to create a skit describing an English settlement.  We will then begin to review our study about the colonization and settlement to get ready for a test in the middle of February.

Science: We have really been enjoying learning about the human body systems. Currently we are studying the respiratory system and will have a test on this system the beginning of next week. Our next body system of study will be the nervous system. The students have really enjoyed learning how all of these system work together in our amazing human body!

Private Technology Devices in the Classroom

Many students have asked to use “tablets” in the classroom to do their IDR.  Our fifth grade team all agree these are valuable devices that may be used in the classroom.  We have decided that we are going to limit use of electronics to “tablets’ only and to be used only during the student’s individual reading time.  If electronics are taken out or used for any other purpose without the permission of a teacher, we will ask the student to take the device home and return to more traditional means of reading.

Below is a link that we are asking you to fill out giving your child permission to bring their devices in to use.  Thank you so much for taking the time and filling this out so we can better protect your children, and their property.
