What’s Happening the Week of November 5

We have numerous happenings beginning next week.

On Monday evening we will begin our Fall parent/teacher conferences.  Each year during conferences the Parents Club opens up the library and holds a Book Fair. It’s a great place to pick up a book to add to your child’s collection and/or give as a stocking stuffer!   Make sure you take a peek.  Each class has signed up for a time for their class to preview and then purchase books. Check with your child’s teacher’s blog for the date and time they are scheduled to go.

Another happening will be the kick-off to Mindful Giving.  Each class will be doing lessons about how we can be charitable both locally and globally.  Watch for details on your teacher’s blog about these two service projects Georgetown Elementary will be doing in November.

Please watch for a note that will be coming home asking for volunteers to help receive and distribute the Goodies Factory orders. Orders will be delivered on November 13th and ready for parent pick-up between 3:15-5:15.

Finally, we will be continuing with S.A.V.E. on Wednesday mornings.

Math:
We will continue working on decimals for the coming week. We will be adding and subtracting decimals and whole numbers. We will also continue to practice comparing two decimal numbers and putting them in order. During the early part of our week, we will have our first quiz of the unit. It will include writing a decimal number, comparing decimals, and adding/subtracting a pair of decimal numbers. Make sure to check your child’s math teachers blog for any updates.

ELA:
Our week in ELA will consist of primarily reading as we begin our book clubs and study of literary essays.  Students have selected a book to read and have been partnered with some other classmates.  They will be reading their book and then meet with their group to discuss what they have read.  They will take notes on their discussion which will mainly focus on the internal(implicit) and external(explicit) characteristics of the main character.

Social Studies:  We will continue our study of the Southwest and Pacific Northwest Native Americans.  We will be studying the location and place of where they lived, what they ate, their culture and how they adapted and/or modified their environment after they migrated down from Northern North America.

Science: This week in science we will continue to overview the foundation concepts about the seasons and the Solar System. We will do this by taking notes and having discussions from a keynote. We will be having a vocabulary quiz  on Wednesday. Please have the students visit our blogs to study and practice for this vocabulary quiz.

Halloween and G-mail News

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers that made our Halloween Party a huge success!  Everyone had a great time and I saw many great candid moments.  If you are willing to share your pictures with me because I for got my camera that would greatly be appreciated.   I will take the pictures whatever way you are willing to get them to me.  Thanks again to everyone that helped make today’s party great!

I also  wanted you to be aware that your son/daughter will be using their Hudsonville Gmail account at school.  This account should only be used for school work and must be used in an appropriate way.  I talked with students  about the rules and guidelines of this account.  They may occasionally have to use this Gmail account at home to work on a project so I am giving you the address so they are able to access their Gmail account from home.  The address is: http://mail.hpsstudents.net.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Thanks, and have a great night!

What’s Happening the Week of October 29th!

Miscellaneous: We will welcome the Raey Guang students from Taiwan this coming week. The whole school will attend an assembly for our guests on Tuesday morning. The students have enjoyed learning some simple Mandarin terms. On Halloween all of the 5th grade classes will be having our parties from 2:30-3:30. Feel free to stop by the parties! A reminder that we will not have school on Friday November 2nd because of records day. Lastly, we will be informing you of your conference time this coming Monday.

Math: We will continue our work with decimals.  We will be comparing and ordering decimals as well as learning how to add and subtract decimals.  There will be a quiz and homework at some point and time next week, so please check your son’s/daughter’s math teacher’s blog to stay up to date with what is going on in math.

Writing: In writing this week, we will scratch the surface of informational writing. We will spend time talking about and brainstorming topics that we know and are very familiar with.

Reading: Next week in reading each of our classes we will be focusing on what our individual classes need to transition into our next unit of study, “Following Characters into Meaning.”  In this unit the strategies of synthesizing, inferring, and interpreting are the reading strategies that are most emphasized.

Social Studies: Students will be taking a social studies test over their vocabulary words as well as the difference between a primary and secondary source, and being able to “Think like a Historian” and find answers to questions after reading a short story.  We will also begin our study of the Southwest and Pacific Northwest Native Americans.  We will learn about where they lived, what they ate, their culture and how they adapted and/or modified their environment.

Science: This week in science we will be giving the students the foundation to learn about the Seasons and the Solar System. Most of the foundation will come in the way of vocabulary. An important aspect of studying any type of science is to become familiar with unfamiliar words. That’s why science can be difficult for students in the early going. We will also be supplementing the vocab words with videos and hands-on activities.

Tidbits

  • We will be having a social studies test over unit 1 on Friday. Please look for a review sheet to come home on Thursday. It would also be wonderful for the students to study the vocabulary words on the blog for social studies unit 1!
  • This is a reminder to bring in your plastic or glass jar for the Halloween party. See previous blog post about this.
  • If you are out and about and see a sale on Halloween goodies that you would be willing to donate for our store….. that would be awesome. Thank you to those who have already donated goodies for a second time!

What’s Coming Up the Week of Oct. 22nd

Miscellaneous:
Our 5th graders will begin the SAVE program this coming week. For the next 8 weeks Officer Petroelje will be coming to talk with the students about making positive life choices! Just a reminder that Turkey Trot will be taking place on Tuesday October 23rd.

Math: On Monday we will begin Unit 3 which develops the concept of place value for whole numbers and decimals.  Students gain a deeper understanding of addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals and the relationship involved in these operations.  Please continue to check your son/daughter’s math teacher’s blog for when math homework, quizzes, and/or tests will be coming up.

Writing:
Congratulations! We have just finished our first published writing piece of the year on memoirs.  Everyone worked extremely hard and did their very best to get their story out there.  A pizza party celebration is a good way to cap off our first unit.  However, we are not done with memoirs just yet.  This week we will be getting with a partner and spending two days peer-revising each others story.  This is an incredibly valuable part of our writing process and becoming a good writer.  It also helps us when we do writing on the MEAP.  Looking forward: Our next writing unit will be informational writing, more specifically interpretative essays.  Therefore at the end of the week, each student will be given a pre-assessment on information writing with the help of a prompt and be asked to spend two days on showing us what they can do.  It should be fun.

Reading: Students have been reading independently at school and the teachers have been assessing their reading level so they are able to find books to read at their “just right” level.  We will also be working on and practicing reading strategies.  Please continue to have your son/daughter read as much as possible at home.

Social Studies: This upcoming week each class will be wrapping up their review of government and the principles that are the foundation to our constitution.  Watch your classroom teacher’s blog for when their class will be assessing on this first unit of study.

Also, this week we will begin switching for social studies.  Our week will begin by thinking of events from a historian’s point of view. Later in the week our learning will focus on the difference between primary and secondary sources, and the cause and effect of events in history.

Science: We will begin switching for our science curriculum starting Monday. Our first unit will be about objects in the sky. We will be covering seasons, solar system, moon, eclipses and tides. The students will be introduced to the vocabulary for this entire unit at the beginning of the week. Please have students check out the science link on our blogs to study this vocabulary! 🙂

Pizza Party!

Below are a few details about our MEAP celebration pizza party!

  • A note went home on Monday explaining that the students may order pizza slices for lunch on Friday. They need to return this note and $1.00 per slice by Thursday, Oct. 18th.
  • We will eat lunch in our classroom.
  • Students who do not wish to order pizza may still order hot lunch or bring a sack lunch and join us in the classroom.
  • Students need to provide their own drink. They may bring a drink from home or order milk from the cafeteria that morning.
