What’s Coming Up – Week of March 4-8, 2019

 

 

Miscellaneous:

Conferences:

  • Georgetown’s spring conferences will be held Monday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 13. A conference confirmation slip was sent home last week. Please contact your teacher ASAP if you’re unable to meet at your assigned time.

5th Grade Camp:

  • All parents who submitted an interest form for chaperoning at camp will be notified whether they’ve been selected by March 1.

Middle School Visit:

  • The 5th graders will visit Baldwin Street Middle School on Monday, March 4th.
  • We’ll leave Georgetown shortly after 9:00 and return by 11:30.

Early Release:

  • March 8th

  • We are continuing Unit 5: focusing on division of whole numbers and decimals.

ELA:

  • We will begin a research unit in both reading and writing pertaining to the Revolutionary War.

Social Studies:

We will begin our social studies unit: The Road to the Revolution.

Miscellaneous:

5th Grade Camp:

  • Information regarding opportunities for parents to volunteer as camp chaperones were sent home on Wed. of this week. If you are interested please return the form to school by Feb. 19th.
  • Dates for camp this year are May 16-17.

Symphony Field Trip:

  • On February 19, fifth graders will have the opportunity to travel to Holland to see a special performance by the Grand Rapids Symphony. We will leave school around 10:15 and return around 1:00.

Hello There!

Hello, friends! 🙂

I am hoping to see all of you tomorrow! Here are a few reminders I wanted to give you:

  • Any remaining 5th grade Activity Fees are due tomorrow. Please send in a check made out to Georgetown Elementary.
  • Friday, Feb. 1 is an early release.
  • Midwinter break is Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 4-5. Two more days of no school! Won’t it be nice to get back into our regular routine on Wednesday, Feb. 6?
  • Check your email for a new game code for quizzez to review for our  social studies test for unit 3.
  • Please take a few minutes to check for any yellow safety belts that may be hiding out around your house. We are missing several! If you find one, please put it in your backpack to be sure that it is returned to school.

Camp News:

  • Balance reminders for fifth grade activity fees  were sent home on Tuesday, Jan. 15th. Remaining balances are due by February 1. Please make checks payable to Georgetown Elementary.
  • Information regarding opportunities for parents to volunteer as camp chaperones will be coming home after mid-winter break.
  • Dates for camp this year are May 16-17.

What’s Coming Up – Week of October 22-26, 2018

 

 

Miscellaneous:

  • Goodies Factory fundraiser orders and payment due on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
    • Please turn in one check payable to Georgetown Elementary for the entire order.
  • Fall parties will be on Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 2:15-3:15.

Math: Unit 2: Adding and Subtracting Decimals.

  • Students should continue practicing their math facts using Moby Max.

ELA: In ELA, we are beginning a unit where students will be joining book clubs and looking deeper at characters and traits that they exhibit.  

  • Reminder….The students are expected to read 100 minutes a week. As a parent please initial the log when they read at home, showing you confirm your child has read for the minutes recorded.

Science: We are continuing to make claims based on evidence and reasoning and will apply these to our upcoming science investigations.

The Week of October 8-12th

 

 

 

Miscellaneous:

  • Walk-a-thon is tomorrow on Friday, Oct. 5. All walk-thon money is due by Monday, Oct. 8.
  • Early release on Friday, Oct. 12.

Math: We have completed our first math test of the year and will be beginning Unit 2: Adding and Subtracting Decimals.

  • Students should continue practicing their math facts using Moby Max.

ELA: We are working on the first unit of building agency and independence as readers. In writing, we’re making progress on writing a memoir.

  • Students are expected to complete 100 minutes of reading outside of school each week and log those minutes.

Social Studies: We are preparing to assess the foundations of our government in Unit 1 which explores the structure of the federal, state and local governments.

What’s Coming Up – Week of September 17-21, 2018

 

 

Miscellaneous:

 

  • Home reading logs began this week. Your child has attached the reading log in his/her take home folder. The students are expected to read 100 minutes a week. As a parent please initial the log when they read at home, showing you confirm your child has read for the minutes recorded. The log will be turned in every Monday morning.

 

  • This week we have continued to work on our school routines and relationships. What a wonderful group of 5th graders we have as role models for Georgetown! 🙂
  • As a school we practiced our safety drills this week. The kids did a great job of rehearsing the drill procedures.
  • M-Step scores from last Spring will be sent home today with your child.
  • Smile….picture day at Georgetown will be Thursday, September 27th.

Important Dates:

March 26 – **Baldwin Street Middle School tour, lunch and registration for classes (afternoon)

March 30April 9 – Spring Break

April 10, 11, 12 & 17 – M-STEP testing dates for fifth grade. Please avoid scheduling appointments during the school day on these dates if at all possible.

April 13 – Early release

Math:

  • We will be finishing up Unit 6: Operations and Word Problems

 

ELA:

  • We are working on Text-Dependent Analysis which requires responding to reading through thoughtful, crafted writing.

 

Social Studies:

  • We will be having a social studies test early in the week on the Revolutionary War.

Week of March 2nd

Miscellaneous:

  • If your son/daughter is a safety, please have them check around for a safety belt or two because we do not have enough safety belts at school for our current safeties.
  • All the 5th graders will be going to the Grand Rapids Museum and Planetarium on Friday, March 13th. The students will need to bring a sack lunch on that day. If you wish to chaperone, please return the chaperone slip by Tuesday, March 3rd.

Math:

  • We will testing on Unit 5 on Tuesday and then reviewing what we have learned so far this year. Next week we will begin Unit 6 which is called Operations and Word Problems.  Students will be learning how to read and interpret story problems that involve adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with fractions, decimals and whole numbers.

Social Studies:

  • We are learning about the events that led to the Revolutionary War.

Science:

  • We will be finishing up the human body systems with a test over all of the systems on Thursday March 5th. Look for review materials to come home early next week.

ELA:

  • We will be working on looking at information from a variety of sources and to write an informational piece. This is a review of skills that we have been working on throughout the year.
