Our first reading unit this year is all about developing independence as readers. We have already been busy learning and reviewing things that powerful readers do. We know that reading, like any other skill, is developed through practice. Today we learned that powerful readers keep and analyze reading logs. We will be logging our reading at school and home each day. I am asking students to keep track of the amount of time they spend reading at home each week. They are required to read 100 minutes per week.
Reading logs will be coming home today in your child’s take home folder. Here are some guidelines for these reading logs:
- Students record the number of minutes read at home each day.
- Parents initial to verify the time read each day.
- Each Monday, students will get a new reading log.
- All students will have the goal of reading 100 minutes at home each week. That is 20 minutes five times per week.
Happy reading!

Happy reading!
Just a reminder to ask your child each night to see his/her book log. Please discuss with them nightly how far they read that evening! I have been having multiple students not remembering to keep track of their reading on their reading logs! Thank you for taking the time to look for this nightly and for being involved in their daily reading!
My wonderful 4th grade students learned today how we will be using our reading logs during the school year. Today they received a book bag and reading log. Every day they will be bringing home their book bag. Inside the bag will be their book and reading log. They will be reading the same book at school and at home.
Tonight, please have your 4th grader show you their book bag/reading log and explain what they need to fill in each time they read both at school and at home. It is the students’ responsibility to carry these materials to and from school every day.
Research shows the more reading the students do…the stronger readers they will become. The reading logs are a way for the students to see if they are using their reading time effectively; by keeping track of the amount of pages read in a certain time period.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Happy Reading! 🙂
Happy New Year to All!
I hope that this break has been relaxing and full of happy memories! I am looking forward to a wonderful New Year!
- Please remember to bring in your reading logs! The students should have read 150 minutes over the past 3 weeks! Hopefully we will start the new year out on a positive note by all handing this in! 🙂
- I am asking that you try to get to the Public Library by Wed. Jan 9th and check out 2 Non-fiction informational texts. (Such as books about the rainforest, Solar System, Human Body systems, Mammals etc.) Please choose books that are of interest to you as well as a good fit book which is leveled at about your reading level. We will be using these texts for ELA the next few weeks. Thank you!
- Monday we will blog an update with final information about our field trip on this Friday!
Here’s to a Happy 2013! 🙂
I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and got a chance to relax.
- Now that we are 1/3 of the way into the school year I am changing how the reading logs will be working each week. I am hoping to make reading a habit to help bridge the kids for reading homework each night in 6th grade. Beginning this week (Nov.26) students will be required to turn in their reading log by Tuesday the following week. Students will earn one Smile Buck for turning the reading log in on time with 100-149 minutes and earn another Smile Buck for reading 150 minutes or more. If students do not turn in their reading log by the following Tuesday they will be required to pay 5 Smile Bucks to me. Research proves that the more students read the more they will make progress in this skill. I know and understand that kids have extracurricular activities in which they participate, however; they should still be able to plan out the week and set aside time to do their reading homework. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this reading requirement. Thanks for all your help in this matter.
- Don’t forget that our Holiday Program is tomorrow at Fair Haven Ministries. Program begins at 7:45, be at the church at 7:30. The 5th grade will be meeting in the Family Life Center. It is the big room on the far east side of the building.
Make sure you are reading 150 minutes per week. Then make sure you are handing in your reading log by Tuesday morning the following week to get your $2 in smile bucks! 🙂 I only received 6 logs this morning from last week! Hopefully, the other 17 will be turned in tomorrow! Happy reading! 🙂
